Acitretin belongs to the group of medicines called retinoids. Retinoids are derivatives of vitamin A. This medicine is used in the treatment of severe skin diseases, causing its thickening and flaking, resistant to other traditional treatment methods.
Acitren is used in the treatment of:
widespread and severe forms of various skin diseases caused by outer skin layer (epidermis) disorders, such as psoriasis, with an accompanying dry, flaking, waxy rash;
specific skin diseases characterised by dry scales formed as a result of cornification disorders (ichthyosis – an organic process consisting in accumulation of keratin in epithelial cells and in cell cornification, as in the case of nails and hair) and similar disorders characterised by rash, exfoliation or small papules on the skin and mucous membranes (lichen planus).
Acitren should be prescribed by doctors, preferably dermatologists, who have experience in using systemic retinoids and who are able to assess the risk related to the use of acitretin during pregnancy
